AYURVEDA: THE SCIENCE OF LIFE

AYURVEDA is an ancient system of natural healing that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Rooted in the Sanskrit words "Ayur" (life) and "Veda" (science or knowledge), Ayurveda translates to "the science of life." It is a holistic approach that emphasises balance in body, mind, and spirit to maintain health and prevent disease.

AYURVEDA empowers individuals to understand their unique nature and make informed lifestyle choices to achieve lasting health and harmony.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF AYURVEDA

At its core, Ayurveda teaches that the universe and everything in it is made up of five elements: Ether (space), Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These elements combine to form three biological energies or doshas:

  • Vata (Air + Ether): Governs movement, communication, and the nervous system. Characteristics include slim build, energetic and creative personality, dry skin, cold hands and feet, irregular digestion, and variable moods.

  • Pitta (Fire + Water): Controls digestion, metabolism, and transformation. Traits include a medium build, focus, ambition, and a tendency towards inflammation, skin rashes, and heartburn when imbalanced.

  • Kapha (Water + Earth): Provides structure, lubrication, and stability. Individuals are typically solid, calm, and nurturing, but may be prone to weight gain, sluggish digestion, and congestion.

Each person has a unique balance of these doshas, known as their Prakriti (constitution), which determines their physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. Most individuals are a combination of two doshas (dual-doshic), and some may have a tridoshic constitution (balanced in all three). When the doshas are in balance, a person experiences health; when they are out of balance, disease can manifest.

UNDERSTANDING PRAKRITI (BODY CONSTITUTION)

Ayurveda identifies three main body types, or doshic constitutions:

  • Vata Type: Creative, energetic, and spontaneous. Imbalances may lead to anxiety, dryness, and irregular digestion.

  • Pitta Type: Focused, sharp-minded, and goal-oriented. Imbalances can result in irritability, inflammation, and overheating.

  • Kapha Type: Calm, steady, and nurturing. Imbalances may cause lethargy, weight gain, and congestion.

Understanding your Prakriti helps tailor diet, lifestyle, and treatments to maintain balance and well-being.

THE ROOT CAUSE OF DISEASE

Ayurveda holds that all disease originates from an imbalance in the doshas and a disruption in the body's natural state of harmony. Contributing factors include:

  • Poor diet

  • Stress and emotional disturbances

  • Improper lifestyle

  • Environmental toxins

This imbalance leads to the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body, which obstructs the flow of energy and nutrients, eventually resulting in disease.

TREATMENT PRINCIPLES

Ayurvedic treatment is highly individualised and may include a combination of:

  • Dietary changes: Eating according to your dosha and the seasons.

  • Herbal medicine: Using plant-based remedies to restore balance.

  • Lifestyle practices: Including yoga, meditation, and daily routines.

  • Detoxification therapies: Such as Panchakarma to eliminate toxins.

  • Body therapies: Like Abhyanga (oil massage), Shirodhara (oil pouring on the forehead), and Swedana (herbal steam therapy).

The goal is to restore balance, strengthen the body's natural healing mechanisms, and promote long-term well-being.
